A baseline estimate from the Motor Tariff. Use it to judge whether a quote is reasonable before you renew.
This is a baseline from the Motor Tariff, last checked October 2026. Motor premiums were liberalised in July 2017, so insurers price each driver and car individually and your quote can be higher or lower. Add-ons such as windscreen, flood and extra drivers are not included.

The comprehensive figure covers the first RM1,000 of sum insured. Each further RM1,000 (or part of it) adds RM26.00 in Peninsular Malaysia or RM20.30 in Sabah and Sarawak. Third Party, Fire & Theft is 75% of the comprehensive basic premium.
How is a car insurance premium calculated in Malaysia?
Under the Motor Tariff, comprehensive cover starts with a rate for the first RM1,000 of sum insured set by engine capacity, then adds RM26 for every further RM1,000 in Peninsular Malaysia (RM20.30 in Sabah and Sarawak). Your NCD is deducted from that basic premium, then 8% service tax and RM10 stamp duty are added.
Why is my actual quote different from this estimate?
Motor premiums were liberalised in July 2017, so insurers now price each driver and car on their own risk factors such as age, claims record, location and car model. The tariff figure is a baseline, and real quotes can be higher or lower. Add-ons such as windscreen or flood cover also cost extra.
What sum insured should I use?
Use the current market value of the car. Insuring for more than market value raises the premium, but a claim still pays out market value only.
What taxes are added to the premium?
A service tax of 8% on the premium after NCD, plus a fixed RM10 stamp duty per policy.
Do I need to tell my insurer when my number plate changes?
Yes. The policy records the registration number, so ask your insurer to update it when the number changes. The premium itself is not based on the number plate.
