Frequently Asked Questions

How is road tax calculated in Malaysia?

For petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, road tax is based on the registered engine capacity in cc. Up to 1,600 cc there is a flat rate for each band. Above 1,600 cc you pay a base rate plus a charge for every cc above the bottom of the band. Battery electric cars have been charged by motor power in kW since 1 January 2026.

What is the difference between saloon and non-saloon?

Saloon covers sedans, hatchbacks, coupes, wagons and convertibles. Non-saloon covers MPVs, SUVs and pick-ups. The class recorded by JPJ on your vehicle grant decides which rate table applies, not the name the manufacturer uses.

Is road tax cheaper in Sabah and Sarawak?

Yes, for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars. A 2,000 cc saloon pays RM380 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM274 in Sabah or Sarawak. Langkawi and Pangkor pay half the Peninsular rate and Labuan pays half the Sabah rate for cars above 1,000 cc.

Does a company-registered car pay more road tax?

Only for saloon cars in Peninsular Malaysia, where the company rate is about double the individual rate. Non-saloon cars, and all cars in Sabah and Sarawak, pay the same rate whether the owner is an individual or a company.

Do I need insurance before renewing road tax?

Yes. JPJ only renews road tax when the vehicle has motor insurance or takaful that covers the road tax period, so renew the insurance first.

Does changing my number plate change my road tax?

No. Road tax depends on the vehicle — engine capacity or motor power, class, ownership and region — and not on the registration number.
