Car Loan Calculator Malaysia

New hire purchase loans from 1 June 2026 use an effective interest rate on a reducing balance. Older loans and some dealer quotes still use a flat rate — this calculator does both.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a car loan instalment calculated in Malaysia now?

New hire purchase agreements from 1 June 2026 use the reducing-balance method: each month interest is charged on the amount you still owe, at the effective interest rate. The instalment stays the same every month, but more of it goes to principal as the balance falls.

What is the difference between a flat rate and an effective interest rate?

A flat rate charges interest on the full original loan for the whole tenure, even after you have repaid part of it. An effective interest rate charges interest only on the outstanding balance. The same loan therefore shows a much higher number as an effective rate — a 2.5% flat rate over 9 years is about 4.6% effective — so never compare a flat rate with an effective rate directly.

How much down payment do I need?

Banks commonly finance up to 90% of the car price, so plan for at least a 10% down payment. A larger down payment lowers both the instalment and the total interest.

How long can a car loan be?

Tenures of up to 9 years are common. A longer tenure lowers the monthly instalment but increases the total interest you pay.

Do I save interest if I settle the loan early?

Under the reducing-balance method, yes. Interest is charged only on what you still owe, so paying off early reduces the interest you pay. Ask your bank for the settlement figure before you decide.
